Military Housing Benefit — Fort Knox, Kentucky

Fort Knox BAH Guide

Basic Allowance for Housing is one of the most valuable benefits in your military compensation package. Here's everything you need to know about Fort Knox BAH rates and how to put that money to work buying a home instead of paying rent.

The Basics

What Is BAH?

Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) is a monthly, tax-free payment the military gives you to cover the cost of living off-post. Your rate is based on your pay grade (rank), your dependency status (with or without dependents), and the duty station ZIP code. Fort Knox falls under the Elizabethtown–Fort Knox Military Housing Area (MHA). BAH is paid directly to you — not to a landlord — which means you decide how to spend it.

The Smart Move
Your BAH Pays Your Mortgage — Not Someone Else's
Most service members use BAH to pay rent, which means that money disappears every month with nothing to show for it. When you buy a home near Fort Knox, your BAH covers your mortgage payment instead — and you build equity the entire time you're stationed here. When PCS orders come, you can sell and pocket the profit, or keep the home as a rental investment. It's one of the best wealth-building moves available to military families.
Buying vs. Renting

What Should You Do With Your BAH?

Renting
Convenient, But Costly
Renting is easy and flexible — but BAH spent on rent is gone forever. You leave Fort Knox with exactly $0 in housing equity regardless of how long you were stationed here.
  • No equity built
  • Rent increases every renewal
  • No financial return when you PCS
  • Landlord restrictions on pets, paint, modifications
Step by Step

How to Use BAH to Buy a Home

1
Confirm your BAH rateUse the official DoD calculator or ask your finance office for your exact monthly rate. This is your housing budget — your mortgage payment should stay at or below this number.
2
Get your Certificate of Eligibility (COE)The VA issues a COE that proves you qualify for a VA home loan. You can request one through VA.gov, your lender, or we can point you to a VA-experienced lender here in Hardin County who handles this daily.
3
Get pre-approved with a VA lenderA VA loan pre-approval shows sellers you're serious and gives you a firm purchase price ceiling. Most Fort Knox buyers are pre-approved within 24–48 hours.
4
Find your homeOur team knows every neighborhood within 20 minutes of the post. We'll match you with homes in your BAH range so your monthly payment is covered dollar for dollar.
5
Close — often with zero out of pocketVA loans require no down payment and no private mortgage insurance (PMI). Closing costs can sometimes be negotiated into the deal. Many of our clients close with little to nothing due at signing.
